Mississauga Hawks Unbeaten in Tourney - PEAC's Mykolai Chmilenko Scores Winning Goal

The Mississauga Hawks went undefeated to capture the championship at the recent Classic Spring Showdown Tournament at Canlan Ice Sports Scarborough with a 4-3 victory over the Vaughan Wolverines.


The final game was a spirited and physical affair that came right down to the wire with Mykolai Chmilenko scoring with just over a minute left in the third period to put his peewee AA team ahead for good. Chmilenko picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, wove his way through the Vaughan defence and snapped home what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Dylan Morandin, with two, and Alex Matheson scored the other Hawk goals.

The semi-final against Pro North Hockey was another close game with overtime required. The Hawks wound up winning 6-5 when Morandin scored the game-winning goal on the power play on a set-up by John Francavilla.

Although he didn't score the overtime winner, Chmilenko was again instrumental in helping his team win. He scored two goals, including the goal that tied the game at 5-5 with less than two minutes left in the third.

Also scoring was Jonathan Faoro, Ethan Barkin and Francavilla.

En route to the finals, the Hawks beat Pro North Hockey 2-1, Blaze 98's 2-1 and Vaughan Wolverines 4-3. It tied Team Buffalo 3-3.

The Hawks also include Justin Morandin, Kyle Strong, Brandon Rizzo, Andrew Bugeja, Bryden Maiolo, Mario Natoli, Robert Stockden and Daniel Cryderman.

The tournament featured teams from Belleville, Buffalo, Lindsay, Michigan, Niagara Falls, Parry Sound, Orillia, Vaughan and Toronto.
