BOSTON - The Boston Bruins chose goalie Malcolm Subban, the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban, in the first round of the NHL draft on Friday night.

The Bruins selected Subban, who played two seasons for Belleville in the Ontario Hockey League, with the No. 24 pick in Pittsburgh. Boston has no selections in the second round, scheduled for Saturday when the last six rounds will be conducted.

With Tim Thomas saying he plans to take the coming season off, and Tuukka Rask poised to replace him as the Bruins' No. 1 goalie, Subban adds depth to the position.

Thomas, who has a year left on his contract at $5 million, waived his no-trade clause last week, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Friday.

Subban, 18, was 25-14 with a 2.50 goals-against average and .923 save percentage last season when he was burdened by groin and ankle injuries. In the previous season, he had a 3.16 goals against average and .900 save percentage in 32 games.

He joins Niklas Svedberg as the two goalies added by the Bruins since the 2011 Stanley Cup champions were eliminated in the first round this year by Washington. Svedberg, 22, signed a two-year deal on May 29 after three seasons in the Swedish Elite League.

Malcolm Subban could not stop smiling, could not stop laughing.

Here he was, the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban, now wearing a Boston Bruins jersey after being selected 24th overall in the NHL Entry Draft on Friday night.

“The rivalry’s just about to begin,” joked Subban, an athletic goaltender who played for the Belleville Bulls. “I don’t know if he’s going to like me too much. But to be honest I never liked him that much.”
Jokes aside, Subban should be a nice fit for the Bruins going forward. The team already has Tuukka Rask as its No. 1 heading into next season, but with Tim Thomas taking a year off and possibly retiring, Boston seems set in net for a very long time. As well, Christmas-time at the Subban house should be very interesting.

.“A lot of gag gifts,” predicted Subban. “We’ll see what happens.”
For now, it appears the rivalry will be put on hold. Subban, who went 25-14-0 with a 2.40 goals-against average this past season, will likely be returned to junior where he needs to harness his raw skills.

“Tremendous athlete,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told reporters. “This draft is more long-term. Goalies take a little bit longer to develop. Happy to get him. We had him high. We’re happy to get him.
Montreal fans, however, might think differently.
