U14 Program Update

PEAC HOCKEY - U14 PROGRAM Update

December 2010 PEAC U14 vs. UCC @ Upper Canada College

Some great work has been done and all players should take pride in lacing up their skates each day and training with an intention of becoming better hockey players.

Overall discipline at practice will remain our mantra moving forward. Players will learn to be discipline or they will be disciplined.

We have dealt with a few things I’d like to address a couple of rules reminders moving forward and note the consequences for violating expectations.

• ALWAYS BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE

• ALWAYS WEAR YOUR UNIFORM

• ALWAYS PREPARE AND CHECK YOUR GEAR

• ALWAYS HELP LOAD EQUIPMENT

• ALWAYS REMAIN POSITIVE ON THE ICE. YOU ARE PLAYING HOCKEY, IF IT MAKES YOU MAD, QUESTION WHY YOU PLAY?

• NEVER SKATE BEHIND THE NET WHEN PLAYERS ARE SHOOTING –
• NEVER HIT DEFENSELESS PLAYERS IN TRAINING SESSIONS

• NEVER SHOOT PUCKS AFTER THE COACH BLOWS HIS WHISTLE –
• NEVER ARRIVE ON THE ICE PAST 12:05pm
• NEVER TALK DOWN OR BE NEGATIVE TO ANOTHER PLAYER, ON THE ICE, ON THE BUS, OR IN THE DRESSING ROOM

Athletes need to show up each day ready to improve their hockey skills. Elite players have the ability to consistently execute skills both in practice and games. Training at game speed and working through drills and skating manoeuvres at full pace is the expectation of elite hockey players.
Testing

Coaches Kim and Margaret took the U14’s through their initial baseline testing last Thursday; kids had the chance to skate alongside top OHL projected draft picks, Josh Ho-Sang and Dante Salituro.
Current Skill Focus

PASSING: HANDS OUT IN FRONT AND STRONG, CALL FOR PUCK, CRADLE THE PASS, THINK
SHOOTING: CATCH AND SHOOT QUICKLY, RECEIVE AND RELEASE QUICK SHOTS, PRE SHOT – PREPARE YOUR GRIP AND ADJUST TO A ‘SHOOTING’ BODY POSITION

SKATING: EDGES, MAXIMIZE YOUR STRIDE LENGTH; KEEP YOUR FEET MOVING WHEN YOU ARE ON THE ICE.

DEFENSE: STICK ON PUCK, GAP CONTROL, PUSH TO THE BOARDS, GET IN THEIR FACE, SLASH AND CHOP IN FRONT OF THE NET

OFFENSE: LOW T O HIGH, MOVE IN THE SLOT, OPEN TO THE PASS (catch and release the puck), CALL FOR THE PUCK, DON’T CURL AND FACE THE BOARDS… REVERSE PIVOT, PULL THE DEEFENDING TO YOU AND PASS, ATTACK TOE CAPS OF DEFENDERS
