Reps are Ontario champs
Winners. The Mississauga Reps captured gold at the Ontario Hockey Federation’s Central Region Midget AAA Championship tournament. The Mississauga Reps' trophy case is close to overflowing.
Fresh off winning the Greater Toronto Hockey League midget championship late last month, the squad promptly claimed another title on Sunday in Woodbridge, capturing gold at the Ontario Hockey Federation’s Central Region Midget AAA Championship tournament.
The Reps beat Ottawa Jr. 67’s 7-3 in the title game, capping off an 8-0 run at the tourney, during which they scored 40 goals and allowed 21.
Eric Locke scored four goals, Wes Deme had two and Andreas Tsogkas had one in the final. Malcolm Subban picked up the win in net.
“We played exceptionally well over the week-long tournament,” said head coach Mike Tarantino. “As we did all season, we used our speed, skill and team consistency to get us by some tough teams.”
In the semi-final, Alex D’Olivera scored 31 seconds into overtime to give the Reps a 2-1 win over Soo North Stars. The assist went to Kevin Pietrobon. The game wasn’t as close as the score might indicate: Mississauga outshot the visitors from the Soo 65-20.
In earlier play, the Reps beat the North Stars 6-4, Jr. 67’s 5-2, Oakville Rangers 3-1, London Jr. Knights 8-4, Vaughan Kings 4-3 and Ottawa Senators 5-3.
With the win, the Reps advance to the 2010 TELUS Cup in Quebec, running April 19-25, where they'll represent Ontario.
Undoubtedly, says Tarantino, it will be his team’s biggest challenge this season. The Reps will face off against five regional champions.
“Traditionally, Ontario hasn’t done well in this tournament. The last time it was won by this province was way back in 1977. That’s a long time, so there’s no pressure on us. That being said, we’ll do our best...I believe we’ve got a chance.”
